The Agonies of Death
Death itself involves a degree of agony and hardship for the dying person, as mentioned by the following hadith:
"When Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was dying, he put his hands in a large cup of water which was close to him and wiped his face with it, saying : 'O Allah help me over the hardship and agony of death.' "
(Hadith)
The agonies of death are also mentioned in the Qur'an:
"And the agony of death comes, in truth; that is what you wished to avoid."
(Qur'an 50:19)

Even the most beloved
people of Allah, such as the Prophets, went through a great deal of
suffering as they died. However, even their suffering cannot be likened to
that which the disbeliever undergoes. Whilst we cannot know for certain
what experiences a person is going through when they die, we know that
since the Prophets went through much hardship in death, the suffering
of the person who is disobedient to Allah must be far greater than this.
The suffering and agonies may not always be apparent to the onlooker as it is
something experienced only by the person dying.
