The new dwelling place
Then Allah decreed that Adam, his wife and all their descendents would spend some time on Earth so He sent them there, along with Iblees. After that, He sent down Revelation to mankind and He sent the Messengers to them to remind them to obey Him and not be tricked by Shaytaan and share his fate in the Hellfire. Thus, Allah has promised that those who believe in Him will enter Paradise and whoever disbelieves will enter Hell:
"We said: 'Get down all of you from this place (the Paradise), then whenever there comes to you Guidance from Me, and whoever follows My Guidance, there shall be no fear on them, nor shall they grieve. But those who disbelieve and belie Our Ayaat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) - such are the dwellers of the Fire. They shall abide therein forever'"
(Qur'an: 2:38-39)
When Allah sent them all down to the earth, the conflict between faith and disbelief, between truth and falsehood, between good and evil, began, and it will continue until the Day of Judgement:
"(Allah) said: 'Get down, one of you an enemy to the other [i.e. Adam, Hawwa, (Eve), and Shaytaan (Satan)]. On earth will be a dwelling place for you and an enjoyment for a time'
(Qur'an: 7:24)
Even for those who disbelieve, Allah has given them their time on Earth as an enjoyment, but it is only short-lived since He will bring them to account for their actions on the Day of Judgement.
Earth is only a temporary place for us, and in the end Allah will bring the believers back to Paradise for eternity and those who follow Satan (Shaytaan) will share his abode in Hell forever. Our short time on Earth is a test for us to determine our reward/punishment in the Hereafter. It is similar to us studying for an exam. We have been given textbooks (Qur'an and Hadith) to study and teachers (scholars of Islam) to help us with our understanding. We usually have less than 100 years in which time to learn as much as we can about how to study the right things (i.e. striving to do the good things Allah has commanded) and not waste our time on the bad things (i.e. the things that Allah has forbidden).

On the Day of Judgement every soul will be judged according to how they have spent their time on earth by weighing their good deeds against their bad deeds - this is the final exam. Allah will forgive whom He wills and punish whom He wills according to their deeds and intentions.
Satan's mission is to cause as many people as possible to deny and forget their creator and give into their desires so that they may fail the exam. These people will spread corruption on Earth and will please Satan since his desire is for all of mankind to be condemned to Hell for eternity.
"Surely, Shaytaan (Satan) is an enemy to you, so take (treat) him as an enemy. He only invites his Hizb (followers) that they may become the dwellers of the blazing Fire."
(Qur'an 35:6)
On the Day of Judgement, when Iblees is doomed to Hell, he will confess to his sins and address those who followed him in this life on Earth.
"And Shaytaan (Satan) will say when the matter has been decided: 'Verily, Allah promised you a promise of truth. And I too promised you, but I betrayed you. I had no authority over you except that I called you, and you responded to me. So blame me not, but blame yourselves. I cannot help you, nor can you help me. I deny your former act in associating me (Satan) as a partner with Allah (by obeying me in the life of the world). Verily, there is a painful torment for the Zaalimoon (polytheists and wrongdoers)'"
(Qur'an 14:22)
The rest of the people who are saved from the Hellfire will have believed in their Lord and worshiped Him alone. They put their trust and faith in Him and were protected from Satan and the tricks and whispering doubts he puts in their minds. The believers will have overcome their desires with strong faith and willpower, sought forgiveness from Allah, spread goodness on Earth and did all they could to enter Paradise so as to not spend even a moment in Hell.
